    What Are Hidden Object Games

Hidden object games fall into a relatively new genre known as casual games. These are called this because the rules are very simple, they do not require one to become intimately familiar with a controller in order to take advantage of all the available features, and they can easily be stopped and restarted from the same point at any time. They are called hidden object games because the goal is normally to try and locate objects within a larger scene or jumble of objects.

Many of these activities have a unique theme. One example would be the game, "Escape the Museum". In this game, the player is a person trapped inside a museum following an earthquake. In order to escape, he must locate specific objects scattered about the rooms that can be combined to make useful tools for unlocking doors or opening passages in the rubble.

Another is based on a theme of helping artisans find objects in order to make it possible for them to perform their assigned tasks in preparation for a wedding or childbirth. Objects may be physically present in a setting as real items in the scene or they may line drawings that have been blended into the background cleverly.

A game such as this appeals to a wide range of players. Children, teens, and some adults spend hours each week playing them. Many got started on this type of subject as children because some children's magazines feature pages with drawings on them and a list of hidden items to look for within the pictures. The computer games are the natural extension of this, giving players multiple scenes from which to search and different lists of items to watch for.

When an item is found, all one has to do is place the cursor on it and click the mouse button on the computer or the specified button on the game controller. The item will be highlighted and removed from the list of things for which to search. It will also, often, disappear from the screen so as not to be a distraction when searching for other items. In some cases, this may help to expose portions of other items that are on the list.

Hidden object games can be a lot of fun. They help one to focus the attention and see more in a scene than the obvious. Many also have interesting stories that function in the background and act as a theme around which the different puzzles are created.
